ARTICULATE PROJECT SPACE: INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

Welcome! Please read!
Your
Articulate contact director:
Please
talk with your Articulate contact regarding access details and any special
needs of your project.
Security
Please
don’t leave the building open and unattended. Before you leave, check front and
back doors are locked and windows closed (windows automatically lock). Artists have 24 hour access during
their 3 weeks.
Key access through rear door is available for participating artists. Please
RETURN KEY after each use.
During
opening hours, please put ARTICULATE OPEN sign out at 11am and bring inside at
5pm.
Other people using the space
Please
be aware that artists in ArticulateUpstairs
and from the upstairs studios will be walking through the project space and may
also be moving things through the space while your project is up.
Occasionally
artists planning future projects want to spend time in the space. This would
usually happen while Articulate is closed. This might even sometimes involve
small group discussions or artists bringing materials in to see how they look in the space, as
part of the process of installation development (on condition the space was
left as found). Please let us know
if this would be a problem for your project.
If
you want to visit the space to plan your project, please be sensitive to the
current project. If your visit is
for discussion or activities (measuring etc), please arrange to come out of
opening hours.
Occasionally
other events may be held at Articulate while your project is on (e.g. talks). Please
let us know if this would be a problem for your project.
Room sheet
Please
make your own room sheet. As soon as it is made, please email it for the Articulate
blog.
Roomsheets should include the following basic information:
• Location: Articulate
project space, 497 Parramatta Road, Leichhardt NSW 2040 Australia
• Contact:
http://articulate497.blogspot.com.au; etalucitra@gmail.com; artist's contact
• Times: Year, dates and
hours of opening of your project, and events such as opening and artists' talks.
Installing
Articulate's
front doors can be opened to 3 metres wide for delivery access. Parking at the
front of Articulate is free except
6-10am and 3-7pm weekdays. Always check road-parking signs as parking fines are
high. Delivery access through rear is available at all times subject to
close-parking to allow other cars access to the drive-through area; rear access
is standard door width and up one flight of stairs. Please only park in the
back drive-through area for as long as needed for delivery, then re-park in
neighbouring streets.
Please
don’t arrive to install before the Tuesday of your install week unless you have
made special arrangements. You
have earlier access only if the previous project is de-installed before that.
The
side plaster walls are painted plaster over plywood that can be drilled into.
Back wall is plaster only.
Please
bring your own tools and AV technology (See contract - please be aware that Articulate's
insurance doesn’t cover the artwork, equipment or bodies of participating
artists. We recommend you apply well in advance for NAVA professional
membership which includes insurance). Ladders and basic tools are available. Data projectors, media players and flat
screen are available subject to prior arrangement.
Artists
are responsible for returning the space to its found
condition after their show. See laminated sheet in front cupboard (‘Articulate
project space handy hints #1 – smooth walls’) for how to minimise wall damage
and how best to achieve wall repairs.
Beams/wood:
please avoid drilling into wooden beams or posts. Consider pre-existing
holes/nails or cabling around a beam rather than screwing into it.
Please
check with your Articulate contact regarding the strength of beams for
suspending works.
Be
aware that the floor paint lifts easily (if your work has lifted the paint
please patch when deinstalling).
Lights
Articulate
project space has track lighting (six spots with beam shapers and eight wall
washes) and a large industrial overhead light in the front area. Articulate can
help you light your show (on a night before the opening) if you make advance arrangements.
Opening
The
standard exhibition opening is the Friday of installation week, 6–8pm. For
other opening arrangements please discuss with your contact director well in
advance, to ensure PR material includes correct details.
You are responsible for your
opening and its catering. Articulate has glasses, plates, dishwasher etc
in downstairs kitchen, plus table. Your catering could be to provide water in
jugs with water glasses (available in downstairs kitchen), elaborate food and
bubbly you bring yourself, or something in between. Please negotiate
catering with upstairs artist(s) and discuss with your contact director in
advance if you need help. Please clean-up by next open day.
Minding the space
It
is artists' responsibility to mind the space during the advertised opening
hours, that is, 11am – 5pm, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the duration of the
show. Bring food and anything else you might need so you don’t have to leave
the space while you are committed to minding it.
If your work needs regular support (such as video needing to be
turned on and off at ends of each open-day), please come to the space at
beginning and end of the day to ensure it is working properly. Alternatively,
provide simple clear instruction for sitters and ensure individual sitters
understand it.
If
there are days when you cannot mind the space, please contact Articulate well
in advance – the project space must open as advertised. Please do not open late
or close early.
Articulate
now has wifi with password on the back of modem in upstairs kitchenette.
Part
of the downstairs kitchen is now rented as a studio. This kitchen can be used
for openings and catering for events
only. On these occasions, please respect the privacy of the studio occupant. At
all other times the upstairs kitchenette (with kettle, fridge and sink) is
available for you to use.
There
is a toilet and wash basin at the top of the stairs.
Documentation
We
recommend professional documentation of your work well before the final Sunday
evening to allow time for deinstalling and cleaning before the end of
Monday.
We
would appreciate it if you could send us your best images of your project
(along with captions and photo credits) for use on the blog, in a future publication
and for archiving. We’d also like digital versions of your room sheet and any
other documentation and links to your work.
Deinstalling and cleaning
Please
do not start deinstalling until after 5pm on the final Sunday of your show.
Wall
and floor paint is available to restore walls and floor if needed. If walls
need mending, please leave enough time to sand-spak-sand-undercoat-topcoat
them. It is advisable to start work on them on Sunday evening. Please let us
know if you need Articulate's assistance on the Sunday evening and/or the
Monday.
Leave
enough time to sweep/vacuum and mop the floor. Vacuum cleaner and mop etc are
available.
Return of bond
Please arrange for a suitable time for your contact
director to check the space by the end of your last Monday so that they can ask
the Articulate treasurer to return your bond.
